Choosing the Right Size Self Storage Unit

Here are some tips and guidelines for choosing the right self storage unit size for your needs.

Picking the right self storage unit size is important, because if you pick one that's too small you will have to end up moving all of your things again, and if you pick one thats too big it will end up costing you hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you've never rented a storage unit before, you probably have no idea where to start when deciding on the right sized storage unit for your needs. Here is a list of the most popular unit sizes, and what each size can typically store:

  • 5' x 5' - These smaller units are good if you need to store small furniture, or a few random things around the house.
  • 5' x 10' - These units can be used to store about the size of one bedroom or dorm room.
  • 5' x 15' - These units can store about the size of a small one bed apartment (bed, dresser, desk, clothes, tv, fridge).
  • 10' x 10' - Able to store about the same as a two bedroom home.
  • 10' x 15' - These storage units can store about the contents of a large three bedroom home.
  • 10' x 20' - Perfect for car storage, it's roughly the same size of a standard one car garage.
  • 10' x 30' - Typically the largest units available (some facilities have 10 ft. x 40 ft units), they can store pretty much anything you could need.

Hopefully this gives you a good idea of what size to choose. If you are on the border, and aren't sure if a particular unit will have enough space, it's recommended to choose the larger unit. Not only will you not have to move all over again if you need more space, but most customers underestimate the amount of things that they will end up keeping in storage.
