What Can I Store in a Self Storage Unit?

Here is a list of things that you can and cannot store in a self storage unit.

Self storage units are pretty accommodating, and allow you to store nearly all of your possessions. Here is a list of the most common things people keep in their self storage facility:

  • Documents - Many businesses need to keep documents in a safe place for a few years for record keeping purposes. Documents can end up taking up a ton of space, and they aren't used often, which makes a self storage unit a cheap, convenient place to keep documents.
  • Furniture - Old furniture can take up a lot of space around the house, which is why it's the most common thing kept in storage units. Furniture is especially popular when a family is moving, or during the summer for college students.
  • Cars - Have an older car that's taking up too much space at your house? Renting a self storage unit is the perfect solution. (The vehicle must be registered and in running condition)
  • Holiday Decorations - Holiday decorations can end up filling up your closets and garage when they are out of season, which is why many families put them in storage while they aren't in season.
  • Wine - With a climate-controlled self storage unit you can store thousands of bottles of wine, without the need to build an expensive wine cellar at your home.
  • Clothing - If you live in a place where the seasons can shift dramatically, then you probably have more clothes than can fit in your closet, what better place to keep them than a storage facility where you can get them only when you need it.

This is just a small list of some of the most common things kept in storage, there are tons of other reasons to rent a unit.

Prohibited Materials

There are some things that are not allowed to be stored inside any self storage facility. If you aren't sure whether you are allowed to store something it's always a good idea to ask the storage facility before you sign a rental contract. Here are some of the things that are prohibited:

  • Weapons - Many self storage facilities do not allow customers to store weapons in their units, always ask before keeping weapons inside a unit.
  • Combustible Materials - Do not keep any combustible materials inside your unit. This includes gas tanks, propane tanks, fireworks and more.
  • Pets - Pets are never allowed to be kept in storage, not only is it inhumane, but it is also dangerous.
